Last week 30 boys trekked out to Guilford, New York to be the first class of Camp Mesorah’s Sportstar Academy. It was an exciting week from start to finish, with everyday jam packed with sports, exciting night time activities, and even a few surprises!!
On Monday, shortly after arrival, the boys received their official Sportstar uniforms, NBA- inspired T-shirt Jersey, and matching shorts. The boys looked sharp in their new duds, and were ready for a week jam packed with sports. The Sportstar day included basketball leagues, drills, and clinics, ultimate hockey, and baseball. The fun continued with a swim in either the heated pools or the waterfront (which had water trampolines!!), canoe wars, water polo, late night BBq’s and bonfires (think gooey s’mores over a campfire, yummy!!), the Mesorah ropes course, Geerz Biking, paintball, a krav maga demonstration, and much, much more!!
Of, course, no trip to Mesorah would be complete without a rainy-day trip to Hoppies, which has some of the best kosher ice cream in all of Chenango County! The campers were treated to another tasty delight on Thursday night, when there was a huge buffet that was catered from Dougies, complete with all of the kid’s favorites! On Friday, after a championship basketball game and a three-point shooting contest, there was an elaborate award ceremony, in which each Sportstar received an individualized trophy that highlighted his accomplishments over the week. Parents were able to catch a glimpse of their son’s daily fun by seeing the pictures posted at the Camp Mesorah website (www.campmesorah.com).
The boys walked away from this fun week having sharpened their basketball fundamentals, getting a heightened awareness of middos on and off the court, and most importantly, forming friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Sportstar is already counting down the days until next year, which it will run the week of August 23-28, 2015.
