MGBL Launches  High School Girls League

MGBL, the Mitch Gross Basketball League, is now open to high school girls. This extension of the existing league has been an ongoing process, according to Dov Elefant, member of the MGBL executive committee, who stated that they are “excited to launch a high school girls league; this will be a new chapter for MGBL.” He also noted that after first establishing the high school boys league there is now enough interest and commitment from the graduating middle school girls to warrant expanding the league to include high school girls.

MGBL was established in 2009 for students in grades two through eight, and eventually expanded to include high school boys. It is managed by Elefant, head of basketball operations; Moshe Zwebner, a hands-on member of the executive committee; commissioners Dave Norman and Yudy Sheinfeld and several volunteers. The league, based in Bergen County, was created in memory of beloved Teaneck resident and father Mitch Gross, z”l. Its goal is to teach fundamental basketball skills and create unity through the power of a team. All proceeds, after initial expenses, go to local charities in memory of Gross.

The vision for the new girls league, according to Zwebner, is to offer the players a chance to enhance their skills and play competitively. The goal is to expand the league to all yeshivas for all girls, even those who do not make their school teams, in order to cultivate talent on the court in a fun, yet legitimate playing environment.
