The fifth grade oceanography unit is a complex, several months’ long project, during which time the students learn about many aspects of the ocean in our world, from its creature inhabitants to its human beneficiaries, from its underworld habitats to its ecological past, present and future.
Mrs. Wolf, Moriah librarian, invited photojournalist/conservationist Michael P. O’Neill, a veteran school presenter, to speak to the fifth and sixth grade students. He shared stunning images from his wealth of photographs. He explained that sometimes it takes hours to get just the right photo, comparable to the hours writers spend writing and rewriting their work to get just the right words. O’Neill is a great example of someone who succeeded in turning his interests into a career. His books are available for students in the Moriah Library, and can be purchased from Amazon or Batfish Books.
