Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a condition in which people have problems with memory and thinking that are mild but noticeable. As people grow older, their memory and thinking naturally decline, but in the case of mild cognitive impairment, the decline is more than expected for a person’s age. Signs of mild cognitive impairment include difficulty coming up with specific words, forgetting events or appointments, or misplacing things. The signs and symptoms of mild cognitive impairment are frequently recognized by family or friends of the individual with the condition. People with mild cognitive impairment are still able to independently carry out regular daily activities; however, they are at a significantly increased risk for developing dementia.

As life expectancies globally rise with advances in medicine, so too does our understanding of age-related disease. Risk factors for mild cognitive impairment are widespread and include genetics, along with many treatable and preventable conditions such as diabetes, depression, infection, nutrient deficiencies and cardiovascular disease.

At The Memory Center, we focus on treating individuals in a comprehensive manner: we treat people, not conditions. Our dedication is to the early recognition and management of conditions that can lead to mild cognitive impairment, putting us at the forefront of the fight against memory impairment.

Modifiable risk factors can contribute to up to 40% of worldwide dementias. This means that brain health, in many ways, is in our control. There are steps you can take to prevent or slow mild cognitive impairment, and we’re here to guide you. There is a phenomenon called neuroplasticity, in which neural networks in the brain change via growth and reorganization; the brain can literally rewire itself. We use this understanding, along with groundbreaking technology, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, to heal our patients and prevent symptom progression.

Mild cognitive impairment, and more so dementia, can have drastic impacts on a person’s life and the lives of his/her loved ones. At The Memory Center, we use a multidisciplinary team of professionals along with revolutionary diagnostic and treatment options to combat all conditions that lead to cognitive decline. Our dedicated team includes board certified internal medicine, neurology and psychiatry physicians, along with a complete staff of highly qualified individuals, to ensure that you get personalized, compassionate and complete medical care. We understand the negative stigma associated with cognitive decline, but we urge you to bring yourself or a loved one for an extensive evaluation so we can identify potential issues early and aggressively prevent the progression of any condition you may suffer from.
