Moadim L’STEAMcha From JKHA

JKHA middle school students kicked off its Moadim L’STEAMcha program with Rosh Hashanah. Moadim L’STEAMcha is an interdisciplinary exploration of the chagim with experiential learning, tying in the Jewish holidays with science, technology, engineering, art and math projects. Students learned about Rosh Hashanah as a Day of Judgement and how we are encouraged to look at ourselves as beinonim; people are neither righteous nor wicked but rather in between. By doing so, we can consider how one positive action can tip the scales. Students used hangers, cups, string, beads and pom poms to create their own scales of mitzvot and aveirot. After balancing the two sides, students were asked to consider which mitzvah they could do to tip the scales in the right direction. This activity was inspiring in advance of the upcoming High Holidays and will hopefully continue to impact every action, as students recognize that every step can make a world of a difference.
