A Teaching Hospital Is Best

(Courtesy of SMGH) A prominent doctor in the Passaic-Clifton community has often stated that when considering a hospital, patients should only go to a teaching hospital. What is a teaching hospital?

A teaching hospital is a hospital that provides medical education and training to future and current health professionals. Teaching hospitals use a residency program to educate qualified physicians, podiatrists, dentists and pharmacists who are receiving training after attaining their medical degree. Those that attend a teaching hospital or clinic would practice medicine under the direct or indirect supervision of a senior medical clinician registered in that specialty, such as an attending physician or consultant, where new doctors can learn to practice medicine in a safe, supervised setting.1

“Since Hatzolah and National Medical Education & Training Center partnered with St. Mary’s General Hospital, I thought it was time to review our other education programs,” said George Matyjewicz, PhD, community liaison.

Graduate Medical Education.2 The Prime Health Care Consortium (PHCC) at St. Mary’s General and Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital residency programs are focused on the essentials of the future of medical education, with the expertise and strength of our experienced and knowledgeable medical staff of over 1,200 in a variety of specialties. The goal is to build medical leaders together with formal affiliations with Rutgers New Jersey School of Medicine, Seton Hall University, Touro College and St. George Medical School in fully accredited programs in podiatric medicine and surgery residency and internal medicine.

Podiatry Residency Program. Fully accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education and the Council on Teaching Hospitals, the goal of the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency program is to provide residents with a structured three-year educational program with an appropriate mix of extensive clinical experiences and academics. The program, with added credentials in reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery (PMSR/RRA) is designed to provide residents with the education and training necessary to acquire the experience and develop the skills and attitudes to assure the special competence and judgment expected of today’s podiatric physician. The Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency program at St. Mary’s General Hospital intends to produce well-rounded podiatric physicians and surgeons who will appreciate the total patient’s medical wellbeing.

Clinical experiences includes anesthesiology, internal medicine pathology/lab, behavioral science, infectious disease, plastic surgery, dermatology orthopedics podiatry, wound care, office rotations, podiatric surgery, emergency room, outpatient clinic reconstructive rearfoot and ankle symptoms surgery, radiology rheumatology, trauma, rehabilitation and general surgery and vascular surgery.

Internal Medicine Residency Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Our philosophy is to treat residents more as academics rather than as employees. We strive to provide an atmosphere that is conducive for learning while helping you to reach all the goals and objectives for the Graduate Medical Education Program. Our aim is to provide you with the best education that will help you to complete your internal medicine training and to help you become a caring, ethical physician who will uphold the high standards of the profession.

Training at the Consortium of St. Mary’s General and Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital will give you the opportunity to have an extensive experience in urban and suburban medicine. Our program will provide a comprehensive clinical experience for interns, and second- and third-year residents needed for a successful career in internal medicine. We encourage a collaborative academic environment which emphasizes clinical skills, scholarly research and intellectual pursuit.

Curriculum. The internal medicine curriculum provides general medical care and subspecialty experience through lectures, conferences, and a mix of experience with primary and tertiary patients. This residency provides multiple didactic conferences to fulfill the recommendations of the ACGME. Our curriculum responds to the dynamic healthcare needs of patients and society, in order to teach the most up-to-date methods in healthcare delivery.

Mentorship. We have an advisory and mentoring program whereby every intern receives a program adviser and mentor to serve as his/her advocate. This faculty member will assist in your learning and development. The mentorship program nurtures both personal and professional growth. Its goal is to strike the ideal balance between clinical autonomy and structural learning for each resident.

Conferences include morning report, x-ray and lab rounds, ambulatory conferences, mortality and morbidity conferences, grand rounds, journal club, senior residents presentation, research projects presentation, administrative meetings, chief residents rounds and didactic lectures covering all subjects in internal medicine—all geared to educate out future medical leaders to serve the community with expertise and confidence.
