Dr. Bat-Sheva Maslow of RMA New Jersey Blends Heart and Science for Families

Dr. Bat-Sheva Maslow grew up in the New York area, went to high school in New Jersey and attended Barnard College, where she majored in history: a unique but intentional choice for a pre-med student. Minoring in biochemistry, Maslow wrote her senior thesis on the role that the American Civil War played in the public’s acceptance of the smallpox vaccine. She was awarded the department’s top honors that year.

She continued at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and was introduced to her initial mentors in the practice of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive medicine. There, she spent an extra year doing research in the reproductive endocrinology division and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. She continued at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for her OBGYN residency, and went on to the University of Connecticut School of Medicine for a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, also earning a master’s in clinical and translational research.

Credentials and experience in hand, Maslow has recently joined a distinguished group of colleagues at RMA New Jersey with similar paths that have led them to stellar careers and incredible accomplishments.

Discussing her passion for reproductive care, Maslow shared: “Infertility is such a personal and vulnerable state. There are very few areas of medicine in which a physician can care for a patient for a few weeks or months and later discharge them in a completely different state. I have the unique opportunity to ‘pop into someone’s life’ during truly one of their lowest, most vulnerable moments, and significantly alter the entire trajectory of the course of their lives. It’s a gift that I never take for granted.”

She went on to explain that she and her patients have experienced many challenges with happy endings. “The process of undergoing fertility treatments is difficult. The messages I get from patients after they deliver their child are always precious. Some patients even send me pictures of their family before every holiday. It is really very special.

“It’s easy when the happy ending happens quickly, but it doesn’t always work that way. I’ve had patients who come to me for egg or embryo freezing prior to having chemotherapy for cancer, only to come back years later to have a baby. Those kinds of successes necessitate the long, zoomed-out view. Even for the less dramatic scenarios, I like to focus on the small, positive steps that happen along the way to the baby, both for me and my patients. It’s a process that isn’t always linear, but it’s always moving in a positive direction. Sometimes it can be difficult to keep sight of that.”

Maslow was excited to share some of the important and recent breakthroughs in fertility medicine.

“The biggest breakthrough in the past few years has been the refinement of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), a method that allows us to identify which embryo or embryos are most likely to lead to a healthy baby. RMA New Jersey was actually one of the pioneers in creating a platform where this type of testing could be readily available. The advancement of PGT has allowed the pregnancy rates for IVF (in-vitro fertilization) to skyrocket over the past few years. For families treated at RMA New Jersey and for women under 35, over 80% will have a live birth from their treatment.”

Maslow explained further: “There are so many other benefits that have come on the heels of this one—not only increased pregnancy rates overall, but decrease in miscarriage rates and poor pregnancy outcomes, decreased multiple birth rates, decreased prematurity rates, and an increase in the potential for siblings from a single IVF cycle, as well as others.”

Maslow is excited to head up the new RMA New Jersey office in Jersey City, set to open this month. “I’m excited about the opportunity to start something wonderful with an amazing staff in an incredible new space. For our patients who live or work in Hudson County, it’s an opportunity to benefit from the amazing care that RMA New Jersey provides, without having to travel so far. Patients in Bergen County can continue all their monitoring and treatment visits at our Englewood office, while still being able to see me either virtually or in-person in Jersey City. Since we are all in the same network, I can maintain continuity of care by continuing to manage their results and cycles from either location—the best of both worlds.”
