More Grocers Turn to Lucrative Catering

New York—An increasing number of supermarkets, mostly kosher independent stores, are offering kosher catering, not so much as a spin-off of their retail grocery business, but as a way of raising the bar on the upscale foods they sell. Some of the supermarkets say that “catering is a good way to build awareness and even brand loyalty.” For some who have invested in infrastructure, it is a way of turning their investment into a larger profit center. Just last week, Fairway Market unveiled a new 84-page kosher catering menu with KOF-K kosher certified dishes. Available year-round at all 14 stores, Fairway’s kosher catering has a la carte offerings and themed packages — including Asian, Latin, Israeli, Italia and Deli. The New York-based grocer also offers full catering service, including staffing, linens, floral design and other party equipment rental needs. There are also specialized savings offers for synagogues and gift card programs to support fundraising and non-profit organizations. “Fairway has attained an unparalleled track record in the kosher food world over the past three-quarters of a century,” said Herb Ruetsch, CEO. “Now, we are building on this record by creating long-term catering relationships with individuals, organizations, synagogues and companies in the tri-state area. Our team will hand-hold customers through the entire process, from giving guidance on food selection to providing party rentals and service.”
