I was very pleased to receive an email response to my letter of two weeks ago about the 20-year agunah unsolved problem (“Assisting in the Agunah Problem,” January 25, 2024). The writer was Rachel Levmore of Israel who serves the Young Israel region there on the questions of agunot.
Let me repeat that my major concern in this particular case is not the woman and her ex. Rather it is the inability of the Orthodox rabbis to resolve this unfortunate situation.They hide behind their statements that the batei din involved are not acceptable or are rogue (whatever that means).
The ex in this case lives in Las Vegas. If I were going to the Super Bowl I would meet with him there to tell him how he is the real winner, having beaten so many Orthodox rabbis at the halachic game. I also would try to convince him to do the right thing and punt.
The beit din in question is located in Monsey. Which of you readers will go there and speak with them?
