Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

In the article in last week’s Jewish Link on the problem of funding our children’s yeshiva education (“Rabbi Jeremy Wieder Offers Plan to Secure Day School Community’s Financial Future”), Rabbi Wieder presented a clear headed approach firmly grounded in Torah principles. His ideas need to be implemented.

The tax/public school model sounds like the right way to go, but implementing it will be extremely challenging. This model can work, if in addition to obligating families with kids no longer in yeshiva, it uses income levels to determine contribution levels. A flat tax on everyone won’t work. If it would be low enough to be fair to everyone, it won’t be high enough to solve the problem. On the other hand, a lot of people aren’t going to want to submit their tax returns to a committee. Finding volunteers to be on such a committee will be daunting.

I hope our community and others around the country find ways to address these challenges and others that this model will present.

Yasher kochachem for bringing this urgent issue to the attention of your readership.
