Moriah Eighth Grade Participates in UNESCO Rally

The Moriah eighth grade students traveled to Manhattan to participate in a rally at the United Nations. The rally was organized to protest the recent UNESCO resolution that attempts to rewrite history and erase the connection of the Jewish people to Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. The rally started in front of the Israeli Consulate and participants marched from there to the United Nations.

Rabbi Avi Weiss, one of the organizers of the rally, singled out the large crowd of Moriah students and told the public how important it was that they participated. He mentioned Natan Sharansky’s plight and how young people attending rallies can make all the difference. He described the Jewish people’s connection to Jerusalem and argued that participation in this rally is a form of “worship with our feet.”

Alexa Schanzer, an eighth grade student, said, “I feel this rally is important to attend because it creates awareness to the public of the problems surrounding the UNESCO resolution.”

One of the speakers at the event was Moriah’s own Morah Nini Berger. She spoke passionately about the importance of youth speaking out about important issues and connected their involvement in this rally to what they are learning presently in their classroom.

Rabbi Alter, head of The Moriah School, said, “These types of events show our students that they can and must make a difference. Our students waving large Israeli flags, singing Hatikva and Am Yisrael Chai proudly in front of the UN, a body that has a clear anti-semitic bias, show the world, and more importantly our own people, that we have a bright future.”
