What are the requirements to be president of the United States? Moriah fifth graders can explain these requirements as well as many other details relating to their civic responsibilities as American citizens. As experts, the fifth graders used their knowledge to mount a mock election pitting Laffy Taffy against Hershey Kisses. Creating trailers, advertisements, slogans and posters the students presented their information to the third and fourth graders to see which candidate/product would prevail in this mock election process. This week, on November 7, the fifth graders monitored a real election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump with the first through fifth grades in the lower school. Students were required to register the week before, then cast their votes in the Moriah election booth.
Some comments heard among the students were, “Do our votes really count?,” “Do I have to go into the booth alone; I’m afraid!,” “When grown-ups vote do they get a candy, too?”
After the results were tallied a winner was declared at Moriah. Who will the real president be? We will all have to wait and see after the Electoral College meets to return the results in December.
