Moriah Is All About Yom Kippur

The Moriah School kindergartners have been busy learning all about Yom Kippur. On the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Aseret Yemei Teshuva, Hashem gives us the chance to begin anew. We say “I’m sorry,” “I’ll try to be better” and “I’ll try to do mitzvot.” They enjoyed reading the story of Yonah together. They learned that the story of Yonah is read on Yom Kippur afternoon. It ties together all the Yom Kippur concepts. Yonah teaches us that we cannot hide from our mistakes and if we are truly sorry, we can be forgiven and start anew. The students understand that it might be hard to say “I am sorry,” but it is an important thing to do. Each of the students enjoyed making their very own Yonah and the Whale toss game. They decorated a cup to look like a blue whale. They turned a balloon (filled with flour) into Yonah. They attached Yonah to the cup with a string. Now, the children can retell the story as they catch (and swallow) Yonah, and spit him out again. What a great way to develop eye-hand coordination. So fun!
