There are many emotions that children experience as they return to school after the summer, including excitement, nervousness, happiness or shyness. Learning how to share feelings with other members of the classroom community is an important interpersonal skill. One technique that we like to use to facilitate the development of communication skills in kindergarten, is called, “Turn and Talk.” Each child gathers their thoughts and turns, knee to knee and eye to eye, facing their talking partner. Taking turns, each child shares their ideas, feelings or opinion with their partner. The children enjoyed this bonding time, as they had fun working on their conversational skills.
