Moriah Second Graders Create Spider Diaries

Moriah second graders are enjoying a remarkable unit based on the story “Diary of a Spider,” by Doreen Cronin. First, the class read the story from their reading series. The children are learning personification by writing their own creative spider diaries. They learned the concept of cause and effect through Spider’s antics. The leveled readers and mini-books gave them a chance to compare and contrast spiders with other insects and creepy-crawlies. The children were introduced to letter writing by making postcards from Grandpa to Spider which also reinforced personification. The students enjoyed arts and crafts making spider diaries, informational packets on spiders and drawing pictures for their postcards. What unit would be complete without some math based on multiples of eight spider legs?
