Moriah second grade has enjoyed an exciting spring learning about animals. They started by learning characteristics of the six classes of animals. The children then chose an animal class they would like to research. Finally, they picked their favorite animal in their group to study. The classes used both print and digital sources for information. One would not believe that these are second grade students when viewing the phenomenal reports that were produced!
In addition to their written projects, the students also made a digital slide show for the class. A hands on science experiment comparing the shapes of various bird beaks and how they are adapted to function best in nature was incorporated into the unit. The wonderful culmination to this unit will be their trip to the Turtle Back Zoo. Representatives from the zoo will introduce them to a variety of animals, many of which we could touch. Some of the highlights are petting stingrays and sharks in the touch tank, feeding the goats and seeing many of the animals they had learned so much about. Over the next week each child will have their own chance to shine as they share their remarkable animal reports.
