Moriah has participated in the “Hour of Code” for the past three years. Students in grades one through three have received certificates for their participation. This event was so popular that students have been clamoring for more “techie” clubs. In response, Moriah launched their first Minecraft Club this year and it has been wildly successful. Students working on school-supplied laptops have been able to create, collaborate on and design a complex city of their own design.
This exciting STEM program is supervised by the educational technology department but run with the cooperation of a select group of sixth grade students. When the invitation went out last year, the response was remarkable—more than 20 children registered. The students in the club, who became the founding members, worked closely with the school ed-tech department and middle school leadership to set up their mission and plans for their club. This cooperative group designed their own Google+ page to share their progress with The Moriah School community, and have shown impressive leadership skills in the club’s design and collaborative nature.
