This past Sunday, MTA’s Robotics Team, Lionotics, competed in the New York City qualifier at Queens Metropolitan High School. After the huge victory they celebrated earlier this year, the team decided to redesign their robots from scratch. Unfortunately, they finished uncomfortably close to the competition date.
The day started well with Lionotics winning their first match but it quickly took a turn for the worse. Due to their lack of testing, unexpected problems appeared that dampened the team’s performance. These problems cost the team their next three matches. They managed to turn things around for their final match, but with a record of 2-3, their odds of going to the playoffs were low.
Even though Lionotics didn’t make it into the playoffs, their journey did not end there. They were nominated for the Design Award, which recognizes a team with a well-designed and executed robot. After some tense moments of anticipation, Lionotics won! Winning this award secured Lionotics’ place in the next round of competition.
The Lionotics are thankful to MTA for this opportunity, to the FIRST Robotics staff for making the event happen, and to the sponsors: RTX and Fabreeko 3D printing for their continuous support.
