Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

When we visit elementary schools to discuss dental health, we ask children whether even a little candy is good or bad for their teeth. They always know the correct answer is bad. So let us ask you: If your gums bleed a little when you brush…is that good or bad? Just like the candy, even a little bleeding is bad.

Gum disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that attacks your gums, your teeth’s supporting structures like bones and ligaments, and possibly your entire body. Gum disease appears silently without symptoms and progresses slowly so you hardly notice. Eventually, swollen and bleeding gums and bad breath become part of “the norm.” Although caused by bacterial infection and inflammation, the severity of gum disease can be greater due to inherited susceptibility, smoking, inconsistent home care, diet and medications. Gum disease spoils appearance and has been linked to many systemic illnesses including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cancers, dementia and Alzheimer’s.

If your gums are bleeding, the first step is to go to your dentist for a thorough exam. Some people just need a good professional cleaning to help get their mouth back in shape. Others may need more extensive therapy. With the help of lasers, even severe gum disease can be treated with no surgery, no stitches, and in most cases, no shots. Treatment can be quick and easy due to the latest technology.
