MYHSAL Announces Spring 2020 Championship Games Are Canceled

In a letter sent out to Metropolitan Yeshiva High School Athletic League (MYHSAL) directors, League Commissioner Seth Gordon announced that the board of directors has unanimously voted to cancel the spring season’s championship games, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Girls volleyball, boys hockey, and girls and boys basketball had previously been suspended just before the start of championship games, and while Gordon acknowledged that some guidelines for outdoor contact sports are permitted, he could not ignore concerns regarding the health and safety of student athletes, insurance liabilities and state-by-state medical guidelines.

“This was not an easy decision to make,” Gordon wrote. “Especially taking into account the disappointing and anti-climactic end for graduating seniors.”

In an effort to recognize each team’s accomplishments, the league decided to name the following teams as co-champions. Girls Volleyball JV: Bruriah and Frisch; Varsity A: Frisch and Ma’ayanot; Varsity B: Bruriah and Magen David. Boys Hockey JV: SAR and TABC; Varsity: DRS and Ramaz. Girls Basketball JV A: Frisch and SAR; JV B: Bruriah and Naaleh; Varsity A: Ma’ayanot and SAR; Varsity B: SKA (championship game played). Boys Basketball JV: DRS, TABC and SAR; Varsity: SAR, Shaare Torah and TABC.
