Last Wednesday, Naaleh students experienced a fantastic program with New Jersey Yachad. The students first engaged in a meaningful sensitivity training facilitated by Yachad’s informal education department. The goal of the program was to expose the girls to some of the physical, emotional and intellectual limitations of the special needs population so as to help them appreciate some of the challenges and open their minds to “think beyond the label.” Naaleh students were given different tasks which, while seemingly simple, had to be completed with various restrictions or external obstacles. The activities were an amazing way to prepare for the second activity—a hands-on project to be completed together with vocational members from the Mendel Balk Yachad Adult Community Center. Working together, each group decorated Yachad themed bulletin boards to be hung in the center and in Naaleh. Naaleh students were thrilled to build connections with the Yachad members, and are excited to continue programming with them throughout the year.
