Naaleh Launches ‘Names, Not Numbers©’

Naaleh has launched the third annual installment of “Names, Not Numbers©,” the Holocaust documentary series in which the students will interview Holocaust survivors and create a documentary with their stories. Mrs. Kobre began the program by discussing the importance of hearing about the Holocaust from those who were there to witness it. She impressed upon the 24 participants that they are the last generation who will hear the stories directly from those who went through the horrors of the Holocaust. The girls were then shown a clip of an interview with a survivor done by past participants in the program. The video served as a jumping off point to discuss preparation for the interview.

The students were privileged to have Elizabeth Kratz, editor and writer for The Jewish Link, join them to teach interview preparation and techniques. She impressed upon the participants the importance of asking questions in a way that will help to draw out the survivors’ stories and the importance of truly listening to the wisdom of the survivors, reiterating just how lucky they are to have this opportunity. This past week, the students began their study of the Holocaust with Sari Sheinfeld. Using an interactive group project, the girls learned the timeline of events leading up to the Holocaust. This is the first of four Holocaust education sessions that are done in conjunction with the “Names, Not Numbers©” project.

“Names, Not Numbers©” is generously supported by a prominent national foundation. “Names, Not Numbers©” is an interactive multi-media Holocaust film documentary project created by educator, Tova Rosenberg. www.namesnotnumbers.org
