A snowy Motzei Shabbat did not stop close to 100 members of the Synagogue of the Suburban Torah Center (SSTC) of Livingston from coming out to cook. In honor of Tu B’Shevat, Naomi Nachman, author of “Perfect Flavors” and “Perfect for Pesach,” presented “Kosher Chopped,” her interactive cooking experience, on Saturday evening, Feb. 8.

Teams were arranged at tables equipped with pots, pans, burners and utensils for preparing a meal. Teams couldn’t look under a covered mystery bowl of supplies until the starting time. In 30 minutes participants had to create a dish using all the ingredients in the bowl. In the center of the room was a shared pantry containing many other ingredients provided to enhance the recipes.

Three judges from the community waited patiently as each team used their culinary skills to prepare a chicken dish with the Tu B’Shevat theme. Apples, raisins, figs, dates and olives were used with couscous and a variety of vegetables to produce wonderful dishes. The judges tasted each team’s creation and decided on a winner based on taste, creativity and presentation.

Rebbetzin Sarah Proops commented, “Our SSTC ‘Chopped’ event was a true testament to the power of togetherness. From chopping to cooking, our members came together to create not just delicious meals, but lasting memories. A big thank you to the Sisterhood and Men’s Club for making it happen!”

Speaking after the event, Naomi Nachman said, “Just had the best time in Livingston, New Jersey!” Although the snow was falling here, this competition brought thoughts of spring and trees blossoming.
