Robert Max and Barbara Wind posed at a Survivor Speaks program held at Ft. Dix on April 24, with three members of the New Jersey National Guard. The Newark veteran who earned a Purple Heart medal with Oak Leaf Cluster for heroic service during the Battle of the Bulge was captured and survived as a slave laborer until he escaped and re-joined an American unit. During this year’s Holocaust commemoration, Max was honored with a plaque for his service during the war and his 70+ years of service to the community.
