Newport: The Perfect Summer Road Trip

The Rosecliff mansion.

About four hours from the New York Metropolitan area lies an escape from city heat, 21st-century problems, and the humdrum realities of everyday life. Although it was once a summer destination for Manhattan’s elite, Newport, Rhode Island is now the perfect road trip for everyone, from families seeking a road trip vacation to friends looking for a summer getaway.

One of Newport’s unique qualifications is its historical sites—from the Revolutionary War era to the Gilded Age.

One of the city’s most notable landmarks is Jewish. The Touro Synagogue functions as a popular tourist destination as well as an active Orthodox shul. Founded in 1763 by newly arrived Sephardic Jews, the synagogue is the oldest Jewish house of worship in America. You can schedule an official tour to visit the charming interior and grounds, or attend weekday/Shabbat services.

There are also other historical sites in the area from around that time period that are also open to tourists, including the Redwood Library, Hunter House and Fort Adams State Park.

However, the true heart of Newport lies within its Gilded Age mansions. These breathtaking “summer cottages” that were once owned by families such as the Vanderbilts and other powerful American dynasties are now open to the public. Be prepared to marvel at the amount of wealth, opulence and sheer grandeur that exists in this New England coastal town. Besides the homes themselves, every estate is surrounded by magnificent grounds and sublime ocean views. In general, Newport’s stunning scenery is not something to miss. You can experience it on the Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile free walking tour filled with old-world charm and picturesque sea views.

Garden of the Breakers mansion.

No vacation is truly complete without restaurants and shopping. Bowen’s Wharf and Thames Street are both located downtown and are the perfect places to stroll and pick up a souvenir or memento. Unfortunately, none of the many eateries on those streets are kosher, but Root, a vegan restaurant, is located nearby and is certified under Rabbi Barry Dolinger of Lighthouse Kosher. Rabbi Dolinger also gives hashgacha to other bakeries and restaurants in the Providence area.

Whether you are a history buff, a patriotic American, a shopaholic, or just in search of a new adventure, Newport awaits.
