Trenton—Senate President Steve Sweeney, Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, and Senator Jim Beach today announced $445,000 in funding for programs that will benefit some of the most vulnerable residents in Jewish communities. The programs, to provide services to aging Holocaust survivors and to victims of domestic violence, received funding in the FY2015 State budget, which took effect July 1.
“Budgets are about more than just numbers, they are about people. That is why it is so important to make sure programs that serve the most vulnerable in our state get the support they need,” said Senate President Sweeney. “We are proud we were able to secure funding for these organizations, which are working every day to meet the needs of state residents.”
“These programs make a real difference in people’s lives,” said Senator Weinberg. “They not only provide an array of vital services to residents who are facing significant challenges, but also conduct the outreach that is so crucial to getting people in their doors to get the help they need. We’re pleased we were able to provide funding for these organizations in this year’s budget to support their operations and all of the extraordinary work they are doing.”
“We are fortunate in New Jersey to have agencies throughout our state that offer services to help address the needs of our residents and to provide them the kind of care they deserve,” said Senator Beach (D-Camden). “This funding will provide a boost to these programs and ensure those who are living in our communities are cared for and protected.”
The senators advocated for and secured funding in the FY2015 budget for programs that would serve the best needs of the state. The spending plan includes $400,000 Democrats included in the budget to support health and social services provided to aging Holocaust survivors by Jewish Family Service Agencies across the state. The budget resolution requesting the funding was sponsored by Senator Beach.
The budget also includes $45,000 for Project S.A.R.A.H. (Stop Abusive Relationships at Home), which provides services for victims of domestic violence. The program’s services include intervention, advocacy, accompaniment, support services and related assistance to victims of domestic violence. Senator Weinberg sponsored the budget resolution.
