Noam Social Studies Class Holds Socratic-Style Seminar

In Ms. Shira Eisenman’s social studies class in Yeshivat Noam, middle school students engaged in a Socratic seminar-style discussion. They followed a rigid format of conversation meant to help them delve deeply into an issue, cite evidence from non-fiction texts and discuss a matter with each other rather than raising their hands in a classroom format. Students in the “inner circle” led their own discussion about whether the Redskins should be required to change their name. Student in the outer circle coached the participants, making sure everyone was having equal speaking time, that substantial points were not missed and that textual evidence was part of the conversation. After several minutes, the roles were reversed. The seminar allowed each class to have a nuanced and spirited debate. This provided an opportunity for the students to talk and debate with each other like real social scientists.
