NORPAC hosted a pro-Israel event for Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) at the home of Rabbi Steven and Yael Weil in Teaneck. Scalise currently serves as the Majority (Republican) Whip in the House of Representatives, the third-highest ranking member of his party in that chamber.
Scalise recently returned from a visit to Israel, during which he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with a delegation of other members of Congress. They discussed the importance of the strong bond between the United States and Israel, the status of the peace process, and the need for outside nations, including the U.S., to refrain from setting unrealistic expectations or placing pre-conditions on these talks.
Scalise has also been vigilant with regard to America’s support for maintaining tough sanctions against Iran in its race to develop nuclear weapons. He coordinated with his party in opposition to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (Iran deal), and recently helped approve H.R. 3460, legislation suspending the authority of the president to waive, lift or weaken sanctions on Iran until it is verifiably proven that their nuclear development sites have been properly inspected for weaponizing activity.
Asked at the event what could be done about the current wave of violence against Israelis by Palestinian terrorists, Scalise noted that Congress has to be vigilant in calling on President Obama to use his bully pulpit to stand up for Israel. Congress is also considering legislation to limit funding to the Palestinian Authority and cutting off paths to funding for terrorists.
Rep. Scalise will be running for reelection in 2016.
