On Thursday evening, July 17, 2014 at 7:00 p.m., Moshael Straus will be chairing an event for Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), in Englewood.
Senator Reed has a long-standing record as a legislator. In 1996, Reed won a seat in the U.S. Senate after serving three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was re-elected with 78% of the vote in 2002 and again won by a landslide in the 2008 election.
With the retirement of Senator Carl Levin, Senator Reed is expected to be the next Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee this January. Even assuming a Republican Majority, he will be the top Democrat on this key committee. Given all the Israel Defense Missile funding appropriated by this committee as well as other vital issues, Jack Reed will be one of the most important members of Congress for U.S.-Israel relations.
Jack Reed has been a great proponent of Israel’s right to self-defense. In November of 2012, Senator Reed co-sponsored S. Res. 599 in vigorous support of Israel against Hamas in Gaza. While rockets were falling on Israel, he signed on to this bipartisan resolution introduced by Senators Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Kirsten Gillebrand (D-NY), which strongly supported Israel’s inherent right to act in self-defense to protect its citizens against acts of terrorism.
On Sunday, July 27, Drs. Daniel Feuer and David Wisotsky will be hosting Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) in Englewood.
Rep. Meadows, a member of the House Subcommittee on Middle East and North Africa, has been active in advocating for a strong U.S.-Israel partnership and supports the safety and security of the State of Israel. States Meadows, “One of our country’s strongest allies, Israel is a beacon for democracy in the Middle East. The United States must defend and support Israel at all costs and work to help facilitate peace and stability in the region. We must never turn our backs on our friend and ally, and in Congress I will always vote in support of strengthening our relationship with Israel.”
Along with Reps. Schneider (D-IL), Engel (D-NY), and Royce (R-CA), Mark Meadows introduced the Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Act of 2014 (H.R. 4411), which NORPAC members advocated for during our recent Mission to Washington and for which we gained key co-sponsorship. This bill currently has over 280 cosponsors. The bill aims to cut off the terrorist group Hezbollah from the international financial system and curb its global influence through its terrorist-designated propaganda television network, Al-Manar.
