Memory loss can be caused by a group of illnesses that affect how a person thinks, remembers, and acts. For decades, the only treatments for cognitive decline were a class of medications that increase signaling between nerve cells in the brain. These medications have different effects on different people, and have many potential side effects. Furthermore, these medications do not alter the underlying progression of the disease. There is an urgent need for the development of new, effective strategies in the battle against cognitive decline. Recently, noninvasive treatments have emerged, without side effects and with promising results. One of the most researched and encouraging noninvasive therapies is transcranial magnetic stimulation.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, uses specifically targeted electromagnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. The treatment utilizes a helmet-like device, and a protocol is personally developed for each individual who uses the therapy. By specifically targeting affected brain areas, this treatment “wakes up” areas of the brain that are affected by dementia. This fundamentally alters the progression of the underlying disease process of dementia. The electromagnetic pulses are quick, painless, and incredibly effective. Numerous studies have proven the benefit of TMS in dementia patients, and, at The Memory Center, we have seen remarkable results.
An individual, frustrated with the care they were receiving at a different clinic, brought their mother, suffering from dementia, to The Memory Center. This individual said, “The staff at The Memory Center never ignore their patients and their pain. They understand the importance of “quality of life” and do their best to support you. My beloved mom has been diagnosed with dementia. After many sleepless nights of crying, tossing, and turning, we decided to try TMS. After 2 months of TMS, my mom is much more positive about life. We see improvement in cognition. Dementia is not entirely reversible, at least not at this point, based on my knowledge. However, seeing my mom’s eyes light up and smile melts my heart.”
At The Memory Center, from the moment you walk in, you will feel the care, compassion, and warmth of our staff. Our sole goal is to see our patients get better, and to give patients, their families, and loved ones hope and optimism. TMS has proven to be an invaluable resource to give patients and their families light and optimistic anticipation. We understand the difficult nature of dementia and we’re here to help you.
