Heimish has become the go-to place for homestyle, delicious Shabbat and weekday takeout food. But that’s just the beginning. Heimish does full-service catering and event planning to make simchas and business events delectable, beautiful and stress-free. Owner Joel Schiff personally oversees every detail so hosts are thrilled and guests are impressed.
Schiff has become a well known personality in Teaneck. He opened World of Goodies, a destination for sweet treats, in 2006. He started Heimish in 2020 for Shabbat takeout and quickly expanded with convenient weekday options to get dinner on the table in a flash. Customers began asking about catering, and Schiff was more than happy to comply.
“I have worked for party planners and always dreamed about doing events where I put everything together,” he said. Now it’s happening.
One call to Schiff is all you need to make a simcha. “Heimish is a one stop shop for events,” he said. “I’ll do the booking, catering, table setup, décor and food—including my mouth watering candies from World of Goodies. I can also do the music. I did an event last night with violins playing.” He works with local vendors like FillerUp wines and Rock n’ Roll Sushi to round out what he doesn’t do in-house.
Schiff is all-in when he plans a simcha. He not only arranges the vendors, he takes “hands-on” management to a new level. “At an engagement party I had last week, I went around to taste salads before they were put out and I asked servers to come back and season a little more,” he said.
Heimish makes takeout food like you would have at home—if you had all the time in the world and the skill of a balabusta from the alter heim. For smachot, Heimish kicks it up a notch, with any kind of menu choices you want—expertly prepared, elegantly presented and always fresh. If your event is at home, you won’t believe the transformation Heimish can make. Schiff will turn your comfortable dining room into an Instagram-worthy event space.
With the exception of weddings, Heimish caters a wide variety of events. Irving Freid of Monsey has used Heimish for three sheva brachot meals and several kiddushes. “One phone call and you get everything taken care of, havoc and stress free,” said Freid. “The food was delicious and the service was excellent.”
Bruchie Goldstein of Teaneck turned to Heimish for her daughter’s engagement party on the recommendation of a friend. Schiff gave her a verbal quote followed up by a written one only a day-and-a-half later, with much more reasonable pricing than a previous caterer she had worked with. Most importantly, Heimish made a fabulous event.
“The party was three weeks ago and people are still talking about how great it was,” said Goldstein. Her guests told her the food was so tasty and the staff was helpful, accommodating and friendly. “Joel really listened and gave us the look and feel we wanted,” said Goldstein. “It was executed beautifully.”
A weekend simcha at a hotel sounds great until you get a headache arranging all the moving parts. Put the Tylenol away and call Heimish. Weekend bar/bat mitzvahs, for a minimum of 50 people, are a Heimish specialty.
Schiff makes all the calls to get your guests booked and fed. A full weekend simcha might include Friday lunch and Shabbat dinner, Shabbat-day breakfast and lunch and a melava malka with ruach, music and festive lighting. And for nosh anytime, Schiff makes a 24-hour tea room.
Hennie Zolty of Toronto was looking for a location to hold a weekend 50th anniversary party for 60 people, centrally located for all the guests, and chose a hotel in Teaneck. A friend recommended Heimish to cater the party.
“Heimish made everything simple, easy and effortless,” said Zolty. “He ordered all the food for the entire weekend, and had it ready to be served. His staff plated the Shabbat dinner and lunch meals beautifully. The food was high quality and delicious, and portions were generous, including snacks and extras. Joel took care of all the details, large and small; he knew what we needed before we realized we needed it and his pricing was very reasonable.”
