Orangetheory’s Interval Fitness Program  Promises to Take Your Workout to the Next Level

Orangetheory Fitness is a five-zone, heart-rate monitored, interval fitness program that gets you the results you want. Established in 2010, Orangetheory is a franchise of the Ultimate Fitness Group, LLC, whose team of business experts and brand consultants has varied backgrounds in the health and wellness, food and leisure industries. Using the franchise model, this super-team has already grown Orangetheory to over 700 studios, both in the U.S. and internationally, in over 20 different countries. The phenomenon has even spread to Israel, with the first studio opening in Kfar Saba this past year.

The Orangetheory experience is a personal, group-training workout. Clients receive the expertise of the coaches along with the class vibe and energy to push through the tough exercises. The 60-minute workout is divided into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training, incorporating endurance, strength and power elements. Each location offers a broad range of classes featuring different workouts every day, so there’s a new challenge waiting every time you come to work out and you’ll never get bored. The experienced coaches are on hand to motivate and assist you with every exercise, including providing modifications for those with restrictions or injuries.

The workout at Orangetheory is heart-rate based so every client wears a monitor to get an accurate read of how hard the heart is working. Clients can track their progress from one class to the next based on the information provided by the monitors. There are a few different types, so everyone can choose which device is most comfortable.

The methodology behind Orangetheory is the science of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). The goal is to reach 84 percent to 91 percent of your maximum heart rate for 12 minutes of your one-hour workout—the target zone. The science of EPOC says once you hit the target zone, you will have increased energy and will continue to burn calories for 24 to 36 hours after your workout—the afterburn. EPOC is the increase in the amount of oxygen consumption to bring your body back to its normal resting state after exercise. Increasing oxygen consumption requires energy; therefore, the body keeps burning calories even after you’ve finished your workout. The afterburn is the goal of every workout at Orangetheory. If you reach that level every time, you will see results.

Cyril Morris is a partner in the new Orangetheory Fitness location set to open in Hackensack this October. Morris described Orangetheory as “a unique approach that combines traditional equipment in a combination that get superior results.” The studios do have traditional equipment much like any other gym, such as treadmills, rowing machines, bosu balls and free weights, but it is the combination “and sequence in which we use all the equipment and all the training that our coaches administer based on the Orangetheory [method] that makes us effective,” Morris explained.

Orangetheory promises you’ll see immediate results if you put in the time: three to four sessions a week for maximum results. In fact, results are guaranteed or your money back within 30 days. The Hackensack studio started pre-selling in June and will officially open in October. Look for a weight loss challenge to launch the new location. There are different kinds of packages available: four or eight classes monthly, 10, 20 or 30 pack, and unlimited. A number of local studios are already open in nearby Edgewater, Closter and Totowa, all with classes conveniently offered from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Once you get the adrenaline buzz from this workout you won’t be able to stop—and with 700 locations nationally, you can find an Orangetheory studio anywhere you travel so you don’t have to miss your fix.
