Our Impactful New Jersey Senators

We know that many of our readers, friends and community members have been keeping an eye on the diplomacy of the Obama administration and its recent nuclear negotiations with Iran.

It’s unfortunate that the President has sought to establish a foreign policy legacy for himself at what appears to be the expense of both Israel and the West.

What is extremely fortunate, however, is that the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee took on the Administration’s pending accord with Iran, and made it mandatory that Congress get a look at what the President did offer or will offer the Iranians in the future, before any accords are signed.

The new compromise that occurred between the Senate and the White House had as one of its co-authors New Jersey Democrat Senator Robert Menendez. He wrote the bill with committee chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.). Sen. Corey Booker (D-N.J.) added his name as a co-sponsor of the bill earlier this week.

We strongly agree with the timely, urgent actions of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. We are certain that Senators Menendez and Booker ultimately had the security of Israel as well as the U.S. in mind when the bill was written and then passed, 19-0. We are appreciative of their actions.

Iranian officials talked with bombast of eliminating Israel the very week the U.S.-led P5+1 nations were shaking hands and giving one another a pat on the back in Tehran for the proposed accords. We can practically hear the echoes of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s warnings to Congress last month of the dangers a nuclear Iran brings to us all.

This important Senate vote should serve to show not only Iran, but the entire world, that Israel has friends in Congress who not only speak their support, but also vote with purpose.
