Parole Board Turns Down Hamas Prisoner for Release as Group Retains Bodies of Israeli Soldiers

(TPS) The Israel Prison Services Parole Board has denied the request of a Hamas security prisoner for early release, citing, among other reasons, the fact that Hamas is holding the remains of two Israeli soldiers, Lt. Hadar Goldin and Sgt. Oron Shaul, who were killed in the 2014 Gaza War.

The prisoner, whose name was not released, is serving a three year sentence for contact with a foreign agent, prohibited military training, weapons offenses and belonging to an illegal organization.

In its decision, published Tuesday, the parole board said that, while it was not its position to create leverage over Hamas, “the fact that the prisoner is a member of the military wing of Hamas which is holding the bodies of two IDF soldiers and refuses to return them to their families for burial should be taken into account,”

The parole board also said it “believes the early release of a prisoner who is a member of the Hamas terrorist organization could harm the belief of the public in the judicial system.”
