Located at 568 Cedar Lane in Teaneck, Pigtails and Crewcuts, a new hair salon for children and adults, opened its doors in February.
The Pigtails and Crewcuts franchise is a children’s haircut salon chain with over 50 locations in North America. Shana Adler, a Clifton, New Jersey resident, the owner of the newly opened Teaneck location, has been the owner of the Montclair location since 2018. The Montclair salon is a thriving children’s salon with 10 hairstylists and a warm atmosphere.
With a background as a special education teacher, Adler has the knowledge and ability in creating a space to make every child and family feel comfortable and valued. “Haircuts are one of those tasks that need to get done and can be a pain or an enjoyable experience—we want to make it as fun and easy for families and parents as possible,” she said.
The Teaneck salon has four female hairstylists and eight haircut chairs, including different types of car chairs with television screens that children can watch during their haircuts as well as standard chairs for teens and adults. The salon offers first-haircut packages, where families receive a card with a photo of their child’s first haircut and a snippet of their child’s first cut locks. In addition to children’s haircuts, the salon offers blowouts, updos, braids, adult haircuts and a special princess/pirate package, which include a pirate sword and patch or crown and wand with the haircut.
Pigtails and Crewcuts is also available for bookings for bar and bat mitzvahs, upsherins and other family simchas. Adler said that ear piercing is currently available in the Montclair location and will become available in the Teaneck location in the near future. The Teaneck location will also be offering “fairy hair,” a process where a hairstylist puts strands of different colors in the child’s hair which typically last two to three weeks.
Following their haircut, each child can visit a treasure box to receive a special prize. The salon, opened seven days a week, offers a wide selection of toys, child-safe hair products, hair accessories and kosher candy for purchase.
Customers have already been very happy with the Teaneck salon. One customer said: “Amazing service and great cuts! Friendly staff, clean space, and always a perfect haircut. Highly recommend.” Another customer who took her son to the salon for his first haircut was very pleased with the experience. She said: “I took my son in for his first haircut and was amazed at how much he loved it! The environment was very welcoming and our stylist was able to put on a show to ease my son and was able to cut his hair even with him being so jittery. It put a nervous mamma at ease! We love this place and will be coming here from now on!”
Adler plans to have a grand opening of the store in the spring, with a bounce house in the adjacent parking lot, face painting inside and other fun activities for the whole family.
