Please Be Inclusive When Planning a Simcha

We live in a very busy community where every week multiple children celebrate the milestones of their bar or bat mitzvahs. While these events are joyous occasions, there is an important aspect of planning that I would like to bring to light: the inclusion of children who may not attend yeshiva.

It is common for families to focus their invitations on classmates, but it’s important to remember that children with special needs often have connections with the celebrant from other settings, such as camps or shul.

We encourage parents to remember these children when planning bnai mitzvah celebrations. Including all children, even those who may not be in the same school, strengthens the bonds in our community and teaches our children invaluable lessons about kindness, acceptance and empathy. It is a chance for families to show that true celebration transcends school boundaries and that every child, regardless of their background or challenges, is an important part of the community. (You can also reach out to the shul rabbi or youth directors for some names of kids who would be beyond thrilled to be invited.)

We hope that parents will take a moment to reflect on this as they make their plans, ensuring no child is left out.
