Poppy’s Bagels Pizza and TCBY store owner Jacob Geffner has turned a decline in business into an opportunity to lure customers back and draw in new patrons by developing an exciting line of delicious new bagel flavors and challah creations.
As foot traffic has declined at the Teaneck family-friendly institution, Geffner has remained optimistic and used the extra downtime to create a new business opportunity. Geffner has worked nonstop over the past few months to break away from the traditional sesame, raisin and poppy bagels by experimenting with ingredients that have resulted in the debut of several tasty new flavors to indulge customers’ cravings, including the Craisin Walnut, Rainbow, Sundried Tomato, Jalapeno Cheddar and even Dill Pickle bagels.
Geffner, beloved in Teaneck for his mild-mannered, straight-laced appeal, also launched entirely new challah, complementing the traditional yellow challah made with a 300-year-old recipe. Now, he’s introduced the bagel challah with three different flavors, Everything, Chocolate Chip and Sundried Tomato. New creations include the delicious bagel challah, popularly known as the Ballah. Many supermarkets, both local and beyond, have inquired about selling Poppy’s unique creations.
“The combination of decreased foot traffic and the need to stay positive during these tough times inspired me to expand my line of bagels and challah bread to both lure back loyal patrons and create a buzz around the store for potential new customers as well,” Geffner said. “I’ve always been creative and now I’ve had the chance to spend more time in the kitchen, which has been a great experience.”
Poppy’s is no stranger to innovation. The shop, serving Teaneck for 17 years, also features authentic hand-rolled bagels, the largest pizza slices in the township bar none, the freshest create-your-own salad bar and the tastiest TCBY froyo. Poppy’s also delivers to most of Bergen County, spreading its menu options far and wide, which is especially important during the pandemic as more families choose to stay at home.
“I take great pride in my work and invite everyone in Teaneck and all of northern New Jersey to stop by and try these wonderful new creations,” Geffner said.
