Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

Thank you for your informative and important article (“Jewish Community Comes Out #Provaxx,” April 16, 2019) on vaccinations in the Jewish community and specifically in Bergen County. You mention that “The Moriah School decided to take even more proactive steps” and tested all of our faculty to ensure that they have antibodies to measles. Our school nurse suggested that we take this extra step. The safety and well-being of everyone in our building is of the highest priority so we decided to move forward and test everyone.

We learned an important lesson from testing our faculty. We were very surprised to see that between 10 and 15% of our faculty either did not have sufficient antibodies to measles or were in a gray area! These were all adults who had been vaccinated as children! The day that we received the results we provided release time to anyone whose test was negative so that they could immediately receive new vaccinations. Some of those adults planned on travelling to other Jewish communities over Pesach where they could have been exposed to further risk.

I tell this story to encourage all adults to get themselves tested. We were surprised at how many adults thought that they were safe because they had been vaccinated but were really at risk.
