Lander alum, a seasoned Jewish educator, to oversee recruitment and admissions.
(Courtesy of Touro College) Rabbi Avi Weber of North Woodmere was appointed director of admissions at Touro’s Lander College for Men, Dr. Moshe Sokol, dean, recently announced. A Lander College for Men alumnus, Rabbi Weber currently serves as rebbe, director of Israel guidance and 11th grade dean of students at the Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva High School for Boys in Woodmere. He will assume his new role in August 2021.
Since graduating from Lander in 2009, Rabbi Weber has held numerous positions in Jewish education, including rebbe at Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR) High School; teen youth director at Young Israel of West Hempstead; and currently director of teen programs at Camp Kaylie and Young Israel of Woodmere. Rabbi Weber is the 2020 recipient of the Gruss Life Monument Funds’ Excellence in Teaching Award.
“Being a part of the Lander and Touro family at this time is truly exciting,” said Rabbi Weber. “As an alum, I want others to experience the same warmth, growth and support that I felt as a student. I look forward to building on the enormous success and helping bring Lander College to the next stage of development.”
As director of admissions, Rabbi Weber will oversee the entire recruitment and admissions process, working individually with prospective students, parents, Israeli yeshivas and high schools to share critical information about Touro’s Lander College for Men, and to help ease the way for students entering the College.
“Rabbi Weber appreciates Lander College for Men from the inside, as an alumnus of the college, musmach, and recipient of a graduate degree in Jewish education offered on campus,” said Sokol. “He truly understands young men and is a star rebbe and camp program director around whom students naturally gravitate, a person with charisma and depth. Rabbi Weber deeply identifies with Lander’s mission, and we are thrilled that he has joined us. We expect that he will brilliantly represent what we stand for to prospective students and their families.”
Rabbi Weber succeeds Rabbi Barry Nathan z”l as admissions director. Rabbi Nathan, who was dearly beloved and highly successful in his role, tragically passed away a few months ago.
“Rabbi Avi Weber is most qualified to uphold the legacy and vision of Rabbi Barry Nathan z”l. In addition to his position as director of admissions, he will serve as Rosh Chabura teaching and mentoring the talmidei hayeshiva,” said Harav Yonason Sacks, Rosh Hayeshiva.
Rabbi Weber graduated from Lander College for Men with a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He went on to earn a master’s degree in Jewish Education from Touro’s Graduate School for Jewish Studies, and semicha from Lander’s Beis Medrash L’Talmud in 2011. He studied at Yeshivat Netiv Aryeh in Jerusalem from 2005-2007.
