Rabbis of Los Angeles Torn Over Federal Raids and Protests

(JNS) In downtown Los Angeles, riots and protests against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for alleged raids against illegal immigrants have been happening since June 6 and are ongoing. Certain rabbis of the LA communities shared their perspectives on the current situation.

Rabbi Dov Fischer of the Young Israel of Orange County, a Modern Orthodox congregation in Irvine, California, predicts that the focus of the riots will pass since the event only impacts a small percentage of the city’s four million residents. Regarding his shul, he said, “Certain civil disturbances do contribute to shuls’ security concerns, but this is not one of them.” He sees it as a break from the distraction of “their usual demands instead of eliminating a Jewish state between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.”

According to their senior rabbi, Alex Weisz of Temple Beth Israel of Highland Park and Eagle Rock, some members are interested in joining the movement. His congregants vary, with those “who obviously aren’t thrilled with the situation but may not want to immediately go and get their hands dirty from an activist standpoint,” to those involved in protests.

He and some of the congregants of Rabbi Henry Hollander, of Der Nister Downtown Jewish Center, a synagogue and culture center, have attended organized and unorganized protests. Hollander wishes for more federal involvement in their efforts, and is “surprised at how little the Jewish community has involved themselves in this.” To him, it’s based on Jewish values to help out, and we should “be supportive of people who are being attacked in the way we were attacked.”
