Ramaz Seniors Immerse In Sephardic Culture

As part of the ongoing Ramaz 12th grade RamCorps community service program, seniors dedicated the day to learning about Sephardic culture and chesed, with a special focus on Sephardic Bikur Holim (SBH). A representative from SBH came to speak to the seniors about the mission of the organization to serve and support the Sephardic community through all facets of life. Then, seniors decorated and packed Tu B’Shevat packages that SBH will send to widows and the elderly.  The morning of chesed turned into a party with Sephardic costumes, dancing and a henna artist.  Seniors were so excited to show off their moves and beautiful henna tattoos on their hands. Teachers from Sephardic and Mizrahi backgrounds explained how these cultural traditions were relevant to their lives and highlighted different minhagim. The day concluded with a presentation from Rabbi Meyer Laniado, rabbi of the KJ Sephardic community, about how Jewish life in America started Sephardic, became Ashkenazic, and is now learning to integrate both. He shared his own journey—from growing up in a Sephardic world with barely an Ashkenazic minyan to stepping into major Jewish organizations that had little awareness of Sephardic life. But that’s changing. Today, Jewish institutions are realizing they need to better serve Sephardic communities and integrate their voices. At KJ Sephardic, Rabbi Laniado is developing a model where one institution integrates two traditions, building a model of Jewish unity without uniformity.
