Ramaz Upper School Screens ‘ANNE’

The sophomore grade recently enjoyed a screening of the short film, “ANNE,” as well as a Q&A with its screenwriter and director, Adi Eshman and Desiree Abeyta. The film struggled with questions of who may tell the history or story of another by portraying two actresses who conflict with each other over whether a woman of color can play the role of Anne Frank in a play. Eshman is a screenwriter and Jewish educator based in Brooklyn and Abeyta is, amongst other credits, the executive producer, of the Telly Award-winning comedic web series “FabUless,” which was nominated for eight Indie Series Awards. “ANNE” has been screened in more than 30 film festivals and is the winner of five Audience Choice Awards. It was considered for Best Live Action Short Film for the 2023 Academy Awards. They led a lively and thoughtful discussion with the sophomores and left them with much to think about when it comes to minority relations, and the complexity of history and storytelling.
