A research study revealed that many people find buying art in a gallery to be more intimidating than any other shopping experience, including car shopping! The art world can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Purchasing art for your home is something that can be an enjoyable experience.
Art can change the ambiance of a room in a way nothing else can. Having artwork in your personal space enriches your day to day life, while also adding personality to your home. Art can start a conversation and encourage creativity. A piece of art can remind you of your childhood, a vacation, or visualize the good times ahead. The art that you bring into your home is a reflection of who you are.
Start by thinking about what makes you happy, what moves you and what things in life you value. Also consider the aesthetic and subject matter you would enjoy seeing every day.
The best way to get a feel for what you love is to go out and see a lot of art! Visit galleries, look at artbooks, and visit museums to find pieces and styles that you have an appreciation for. Deciding what art you bring into your home is a very personal choice. The most important thing to consider is what you are drawn and attracted to. Do you like paintings, photography, drawings, digital art or mixed media? Take note of the style and colors of the work. Once you decide on the color pallette and art mediums you prefer, you can begin the shopping process.
Budget is also a consideration one must take when deciding what to purchase. It is important to assess how much you feel comfortable spending. If you have a smaller budget, consider buying an original piece from a lesser known artist. You can also look into purchasing an art print. For example, an art print on canvas, a giclee, can often give the look and feel of an original piece. Purchasing art as an investment is sometimes the primary goal of a buyer. However, if you are just getting started, one shouldn’t overthink the value. Buy what you love! Do not focus on the price tag once it is on the wall.
Often times one gets caught up in worrying about filling a particular space. Once you find that special piece of art, you can find a place in your home to appreciate it. It is important to note that while the artwork should look appealing in your home, it is unnecessary to purchase art that will “match” your decor.
It has been said, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” By choosing to bring art into your home, you are fashioning an environment that reflects your personality. Your art will create an atmosphere that will welcome you home each day.
