Remembering Paul Freedman, z”l

For those who are alumni of Camp Hillel, White Lake, NY, in the ‘70s and early ‘80s, one cannot help but smile at the name Paul Freedman. I recently heard of Paul’s passing and needed to express some thoughts at the loss of a truly special soul. Paul acted as the nature counselor at Hillel, taking children on overnights and enlightening them about nature, local wildlife and often a terrifying story or two. However, Paul was more than his resume. Paul brought smiles and laughter to everyone he met, specifically children. He did not play favorites and only entertain the wealthy or privileged child, but Paul looked to bring out a laugh from everyone he came across. He was truly an iconic figure at the camp and charmed his way out of many, many raucous adventures.

Paul Freedman was also a father, practiced law and more recently was an administrator at The Touro College Department of Geology and Environmental Science. Paul is someone I haven’t seen or spoken to in many years but just his memory brings out a chuckle and smile. A true gift to all. T.N.Z.B.H.
