On Shabbat, May 21, Cong. Rinat Yisrael will be hosting three prominent professors from Yeshiva University as part of its Scholar in Residence Program. The three scholars will be speaking about various topics throughout Shabbat afternoon and evening.
At 6:00 p.m., Associate Professor in Modern Jewish Philosophy Prof. Daniel Rynhold will address: “Is it Wrong to be Ethical? Leibowitz, Levinas and Soloveitchik on the Place of Morality in Religion.” Rynhold’s research in Jewish philosophy includes the problem of evil, Nietzsche and Jewish philosophy, and the thoughts of Moses Maimonides and the Rav.
At 6:55 p.m., Assistant Professor of Sephardic Studies Prof. Ronnie Perelis will address: “We are all Brothers: Race, Kinship and the Search for the Messiah in the Andes (1644).” Perelis’ research considers the connection between Iberian and Jewish culture during the medieval and early modern periods.
Following mincha at 7:40., Associate Professor of Bible and Chair of The Robert M. Beren Department of Jewish Studies Prof. Shalom Holtz will address: “Reciting Shema as an Israelite.” Prof. Holtz’s research focuses on Mesopotamian literature and law, and their relationships to biblical and post-biblical writings.
