Demarest—NORPAC’s Arthur Sinensky and Debbie Oremland recently hosted Congressman Brad Sherman, who has been in office since 1997. As a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade, and a co-Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Israel Allies Caucus, Sherman has worked to strengthen the U.S.-Israel relationship for more than 15 years.
Rep. Sherman emphasized the importance of speaking out against those trying to demonize Israel. He spoke about his recent interview on Al Jazeera TV and discussed the current situation in Gaza, calling into question the network’s journalistic integrity. Sherman told his interviewers that he supports Israel’s defensive actions to protect its civilians from Hamas rockets and explicitly condemned Al Jazeera for its biased coverage. He also condemned the owners of Al Jazeera— the royal family and government of Qatar—for paying for the rockets being launched by Hamas at Israeli cities. Each launch of a rocket, the Congressman noted, is a war crime.
In Bergen County, Sherman reiterated his continued support for additional sanctions against Iran. Last year, he and Reps. Ed Royce (R-CA) and Elliot Engel (D-NY), introduced the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act (H.R.850), which passed the House but is being held up in the Senate. Sherman was also an original co-sponsor of H.R.3766—which would amend the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 to require congressional approval of nuclear cooperation agreements with foreign countries.
In Congress, Sherman has gone to great lengths in support of the U.S.-Israel relationship. He has sponsored and co-sponsored countless pieces of legislation, including the Visa Waver for Israel Act of 2013 (H.R.300), the U.S.-Israel Strategic Partnership Act of 2014 (H.R.938), the Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Act of 2014 (H.R.4411), the Iron Dome Support Act (H.R.1130), the Emergency Iron Dome Replenishment Act (H.R.5235), and the U.S.-Israel Energy Cooperation Act, just to name a few.
He is running as an incumbent this November.
