My series of articles about the contemporary malaise of entitlement among today’s youth merely observed that in the past when a child misbehaved there were consequences. No one reading the article believes that I endorse child beating (“Don’t Shame Children,” June 15, 2023). Granted that in the past teachers and parents were not attuned to other issues which caused a child to act out. Today we are hyper aware which is the opposite extreme. If a teacher today has a “difficult” student, it is often the teacher and the school that gets in trouble for not being sensitive to that child’s needs, but that was not the aim of the article. Today we are more aware, perhaps overly so, but that is the subject of another article.
