Yael Buechler is on a mission to bring creativity and excitement to Jewish holiday celebrations. In addition to being the outreach coordinator at The Leffell School in Westchester, Buechler has built a company, Midrash Manicures, to make Jewish-themed nail decals, pajamas and accessories to engage children and make celebrating Jewish life even more special. Her newest creation is retro 1980s Rosh Hashanah pajamas, inspired by the alignment of the Hebrew year 5785 with the year she was born, 1985. “Rosh Hashanah is such a time of reflection. The nostalgic theme gets us thinking as parents about our upbringing,” she said.
For Buechler, the ’80s were a vibrant time with lots of bright colors like green, blue, purple and pink. The print she created reflects the colors and styles of that period. “The colors and graphics will appeal to kids, and the print will be nostalgic for parents,” she said. The pj’s come in both children’s and adult sizes, so everyone in the family can enjoy them together. “The experience of the parents wearing the pj’s elevates the holiday experience for the kids,” she said. Buechler began work on the pajamas after Pesach. “It took a while to choose which items I would focus on. I chose the shofar, apples and honey and the kiddush cup.”
Buechler’s 6-year-old son has been her model since she began her first pajama project, matzah pj’s for Passover, in 2022. Now the little boy is getting involved in the creative end as well. “He saw the colors as they were evolving; he loves being the first to see them,” Buechler said. He’s starting to give mom his input for future designs. “He wants Sukkot pajamas,” she noted. “I might have to honor his request.”
