Students in the RKYHS Betzalel Art Scholars program are learning about Israeli artist Yaakov Agam. Agam is best known for his pioneering of kinetic art. His lenticular prints, or Agamographs, made illusory images appear depending on the audience’s viewpoint. As part of their study, the tenth grade art students created their own Agamographs.
Freshmen art classes have been exploring Sumi-e, a Japanese watercolor painting. Sumi-e, is the embodiment of Japanese aesthetics, using just simple black ink and carefully curated white space. It is an ancient technique of monochromatic drawing, based on the use of India ink, originating in Chinese painting. The students learned the technique and history of Sumi-e, and explored using India Ink and different kinds of brushes. They learned how to create different shades of ink by adding different amounts of water to the ink.
