RKYHS senior girls had the opportunity to be witness to a meaningful and important part of their teacher Alex Fuchs’ wedding process. RKYHS Judaic studies faculty member Ms. Gerson taught the students about marriage in Judaism, the ketubah, its history and its importance. After discussing divorce in Jewish law as compared to civil law, Gerson then taught the female students about a halachic prenuptial agreement and preventing situations of get recalcitrance.
Fuchs and her fiancé Zach Beer joined the students for the discussion. Beer, who has done work for ORA, the Organization for the Resolution of Agunot, and Fuchs spoke from the heart as they described for students why they are signing this document and its importance. In the presence of the students, witnessed by two 18 year old seniors and notarized by Nurit Gans, a member of the school’s finance office, Fuchs and Beer signed their halachic prenup, providing a lasting impression for all in the room.
